Kuznetsova takes Pilot Pen title; Szavay injured

New Haven, CT (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova escaped with the title at the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament after Hungarian Agnes Szavay had to retire in the second set.

Kuznetsova lost the first set 6-4, but was leading 3-0 when Szavay called it quits due to a back injury. It was the third straight match Kuznetsova won due to an opponent retiring.

Kuznetsova recorded her first title of the season and ninth of her career. She was 0-4 in her previous finals appearances this season. She brought home over $88,000 for her effort.

Szavay, who was playing Kuznetsova for the first time, captured over $47,000 for finishing second.
