Red Wings host Blackhawks in regular-season finale(Sports Network) - With the Presidents' Trophy locked up, the Detroit Red Wings will close out their regular season this afternoon as they welcome the Chicago Blackhawks to Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings will finish with the best record in the NHL and will also have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs. Detroit will face eighth-seeded Nashville in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Detroit has won the Presidents' Trophy in three of four and four of the last
six seasons. The Blackhawks will miss the playoffs for the fifth straight season, but their 88 points are the most for the club since posting 96 points in 2001-02. The Red Wings have won two of their last three games and are coming off Thursday's dramatic win over visiting Columbus. Henrik Zetterberg scored the go-ahead goal with 11.4 seconds to play, as Detroit scored twice in the final 3 1/2 minutes to top the Blue Jackets, 3-2. The victory clinched the Presidents' Trophy for the Red Wings. Columbus goaltender Pascal Leclaire attempted to play Pavel Datsyuk's dump-in on the winning play, but lost control of the puck. Zetterberg picked the puck up behind the goal line and flipped a backhander that deflected off Leclaire's leg and into the net. Mark Hartigan and Johan Franzen lit the lamp for the Red Wings. Datsyuk added a pair of assists, and Dominik Hasek stopped 20 shots to earn the win. Detroit is 28-9-3 as the hosts this season and has taken three of four and seven of its last nine in the Motor City. The Blackhawks have won four straight games and are coming off Thursday's victory over visiting Nashville. Adam Burish notched the game-winning goal early in the contest, as Chicago rode a three-goal first period to top Nashville, 3-1, at the United Center. Patrick Kane registered a goal and one assist and Jonathan Toews also tallied for the Blackhawks, who have also won five of their last six tests. Kane will finish the season as the leading scorer among rookies, as the 19-year-old has 71 points (20 goals, 51 assists). Toews is the leading rookie goal-scorer with 24 markers this season. With the victory, Chicago earned its 40th win of the season, the first time it has reached the plateau since winning 41 games in 2001-02. Patrick Lalime made 29 saves to post his 16th win of the season. The Blackhawks are just 17-17-6 as the visiting team this year and have dropped three of five and five of their last eight road tests. Chicago has an impressive 5-2 record against the Red Wings this year after coming into this season losing eight of nine and 15 of the previous 17 meetings against Detroit. The Blackhawks have still lost five of seven and 12 of their last 15 in Motown.
