Beloved thoroughbred Funny Cide retired

Saratoga Springs, NY (Sports Network) - Former Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide has been retired from racing. The announcement was made by trainer Barclay Tagg.

Funny Cide won the Run for the Roses and Preakness Stakes in 2003 on his way to being crowned champion three-year-old. He finished third in the Belmont Stake to Empire Maker.

The gelding is owned by Sackatoga Stable and has been primarily ridden by Jose Santos. Most recently Funny Cide won the Wadsworth Memorial at Finger Lakes Race Track in upstate New York.

"This gave him an opportunity to show his stuff in front of a hometown crowd," said Jack Knowlton, one of the six original owners.

A veteran of 38 races, Funny Cide is being retired with no apparent injuries. He closes his career as the richest New York-bred in history with $3,529,412.

The seven-year-old won 11 races, but failed to win until this July 4th since taking the Dominion Day Stakes last year at Woodbine.
