Herb McCauley returns to racing at Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Herb McCauley, a winner of more than 3,000 races, made his return to racing over the weekend at The Meadowlands. The 50-year-old jockey last rode in 1998 at Monmouth Park.

McCauley retired from riding after severely breaking his left leg at Monmouth on July 10, 1998. The injury required four operations and extensive rehabilitation.

One of the top jockeys during the 1980's and 90's, McCauley had two mounts on the Saturday night card at The Meadowlands. He finished fifth with Calabria Bella in the ninth race and in the 10th race he finished ninth with Lightning Point.

"It feels really good to be back," McCauley said about his comeback with Calabria Bella. "I felt comfortable off the gate. I was waiting for the field to come back to me, but they never did. Being out there was like waking up to a world I belong in. It's really good to be back."

McCauley has won 3,049 races in more than 20,000 mounts for better than $71 million. He was aboard Deputed Testimony when the colt won the 1983 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park. In 1993 he captured the Suburban and Gulfstream Park Handicaps and the Pimlico Special with Devil His Due, and rode Wallenda to victories in the Super Derby and Pennsylvania Derby during the same year.
