Bayern sends Jansen to Hamburg, adds Italy's Oddo

Munich, Germany (Sports Network) - Bayern Munich sold German defender Marcell Jansen to Hamburg and replaced him with Italian World Cup winner Massimo Oddo, the club announced Thursday.

Jansen, 22, was sold to Hamburg for $11.8 million and Oddo, 32, was brought in on a one-year loan from AC Milan. Jansen has made 28 appearances for Germany, while Oddo has played 34 times for Italy and was on the 2006 World Cup team.

"We've had our eyes on Massimo for some time now," Bayern boss Jurgen Klinsmann said on the team's website, "so we've taken the chance to bring him in now."

Jansen joined Bayern last summer from Borussia Dortmund and made 17 Bundesliga appearances. He was hampered by a serious ankle injury in the preseason and was not back in the first team through the first two matches of the season.

He is expected to sign a five-year contract with Hamburg that will keep him at the club until 2013.

Hamburg, which tied Bayern 2-2 in the teams' season opener two weeks ago, has also added Croatia striker Mladen Petric and Brazilian defender Alex Silva this summer.

In addition to helping Italy win the World Cup, Oddo helped AC Milan win the UEFA Champions League in 2006-07. He missed Euro 2008 with an injury. He played 25 matches for AC Milan in Serie A last season.

Oddo is Bayern's third addition, joining midfielder Tim Borowski and goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt.

"Massimo Oddo is a player who can operate anywhere on the right flank. His experience, his tactical nous and his technical ability will give us a real boost in quality," Klinsmann said.

Bayern learned Thursday it was drawn into Group F of the Champions League with Fiorentina, Lyon and Steaua Bucharest. Bayern last won the Champions League in 2001, but didn't play in the competition last season.
