Benitez keen to strengthen Liverpool side

Liverpool, England (Sports Network) - Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has revealed he is "working hard" on improving his squad following reports that he is close to signing Albert Riera from Espanyol.

The 26-year-old Spain winger has been linked with both the Reds and Merseyside rivals Everton throughout the summer following an admission that he is keen to leave his current club.

Riera stated his intention to leave the Barcelona-based club after missing out on selection for Spain's Euro 2008 squad.

The winger, who spent a brief spell on loan with Manchester City in 2006, could cost the Anfield club roughly $20 million.

Speaking ahead of his side's Champions League qualifier against Standard Liege on Wednesday night, Benitez revealed his determination to improve his squad before the transfer window closes.

He said: "It is the same situation. We are working hard on trying to improve the squad if possible, but for now we are just concentrating on the game."
