Dutch legend de Boer retires

The Hague, Netherlands (Sports Network) - Dutch legend Ronald de Boer retired Wednesday.

De Boer, 37, played 67 times for the Netherlands. He played in two World Cups (1994 and 1998) and two Euro Championships (1996 and 2000) and had 13 goals.

De Boer terminated his contract with Al-Shamal in Qatari. He missed time with a neck hernia, but despite recovering doesn't want to risk playing in the last two games of the season.

De Boer played with Ajax, Barcelona, Rangers and Twente before joining Qatar's Al Rayyan in 2004. He moved to Al-Shamal in 2005.

De Boer, a midfielder, helped Ajax capture the Champions League in 1995, five Dutch titles and two Dutch Cups. He also helped Barcelona and Rangers claim a league crown during his tenure with those clubs.
