Newcastle close to signing Liverpool youngster Guthrie

Newcastle, England (Sports Network) - Newcastle United are on the verge of bringing Liverpool youngster Danny Guthrie to St James' Park after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee for the 21-year-old midfielder.

Guthrie played 35 games for Bolton during a season-long loan spell at the Reebok Stadium last season.

He will now discuss personal terms with Kevin Keegan before finalizing his transfer to Tyneside.

Guthrie joined Liverpool's academy after being released by Manchester United when he was 15.

He was a regular captain of the club's reserve side but made only seven first- team appearances for the Reds, the last in February 2007, ironically at Newcastle.

The midfielder spent a couple of months on loan at Southampton towards the end of the 2006-07 campaign, making 12 appearances for the Saints.
