Rapids embarrass Galaxy, 4-0

Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Galaxy's 2008 season started the way the '07 one ended - in disappointment.

The Colorado Rapids thrashed David Beckham and the Galaxy 4-0 on Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in both teams' season openers. Terry Cook scored a goal while adding two assists while Omar Cummings, Colin Clark and new Rapids star Christian Gomez each added goals to embarrass the Galaxy.

Cook opened the scoring by hammering home a rebound after Gomez hit the post in the 10th minute.

Gomez scored a penalty kick goal at the hour mark after L.A. defender Abel Xavier fouled Cummings in the box to double the home side's lead before Cummings added another goal seven minutes later. Clark finished off the scoring 10 minutes from time before things got a little chippy.

Xavier was given his second yellow to earn a soft red in the 89th for abusive language before Rapids rookie Ciaran O'Brien instigated a mini scrum a minute later with a hard tackle. O'Brien was given a straight red.

The Galaxy have a chance to rebound from the tough loss Thursday when they host expansion San Jose in the Earthquakes' return to Major League Soccer while the Rapids travel to New England next Saturday.
