Report: Richards to miss a month with knee injury

Salzburg, Austria (Sports Network) - New York Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio received news that winger Dane Richards will be out more than a month with a sprained MCL on his right knee, according to a report on BigAppleSoccer.com.

"It's a lot worse than we expected," Osorio told the website.

Richards' injury occurred during a scrimmage on Monday with sister club Red Bull Salzburg on New York's preseason trip to Austria. New York lost the match 1-0 to the Salzburg reserves. Apparently, the match was extremely chippy with numerous dirty tackles and hard fouls being committed, including the one that sidelined Richards, which earned Pichler Harald a yellow card in the 14th minute.

The injury means Richards, who was a finalist for MLS rookie of the year last season, will probably miss New York's first regular season match vs. the Columbus Crew at Giants Stadium on April 5.
