Revs retake top spot in east with win over UnitedWashington, D.C. (Sports Network) - The New England Revolution jumped back into the top spot in the Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference table with a 2-1 win over D.C. United on Wednesday night. There wasn't much action in the first half when the Revolution had the only two shots on goal. One of those shots found the back of the net on an unorthodox goal in the 24th minute.
Khano Smith took control after receiving a pass from defender Michael
Parkhurst. Smith sped down the left side into the United third before playing
a low cross to the top of the six-yard box. The pass pin-balled off Revs'
forward Adam Cristman and United defender Marc Burch before hitting the feet
of Twellman and going. The game picked up in the second half, after the Revs doubled their lead less than five minutes after the break. Midfielder Jeff Larentowicz scored his second goal of the year when he collected a Twellman pass from long range and blasted the shot past goalkeeper Louis Crayton, who appeared to jump out of the way of the ball. D.C. forward Jaime Moreno pulled his team within one when he scored his ninth goal of the season with just over 20 minutes to play. After Fred had a a shot blocked by Parkhurst from about 20 yards out, Moreno chipped the rebound over defense and goalkeeper Doug Warren to make it 2-1. Warren was making his first start of the season with Revs starting 'keeper Matt Reis out with an abductor strain. That was as close as United could get, however. Both teams have MLS fixtures this weekend as well with New England (11-6-3) traveling to Toronto FC on Saturday while D.C. (9-10-1) hosts Colorado earlier the same day.
