San Jose acquires Cannon from L.A.

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - San Jose acquired two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Joe Cannon from Los Angeles on Thursday for a partial allocation.

Cannon, a nine-year MLS veteran, led San Jose to the MLS Cup in 2001. He is also a three-time MLS all-star.

"We are very excited to have Joe Cannon back in San Jose," Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop said. "He has proven himself to be one of the top goalkeepers in the league."

Cannon has a 1.30 goals against average in 216 MLS regular season games. He spent last season playing under Yallop in L.A. Cannon had a 1.59 goals against average and made 119 saves with the Galaxy.

In 1999, Cannon took the goalkeeper position for San Jose in June and played all 90 minutes in each of his team's final 18 games, finishing with a career- high 14 wins and a 1.33 goals against average.

In 2000, Cannon started all 26 games in which he played, tallying a 1.49 goals against average. He started 26 of San Jose's games in 2001, winning 13 with a 1.09 goals against average.

In the 2001 postseason, Cannon went 5-1 with a 0.49 goals against average to lead San Jose to its first MLS Cup. Cannon was named to the MLS All-Star team for the first time and was a finalist for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year for the first time.

Cannon posted a 1.10 goals against average in 2002 for San Jose and was named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

He then spent eight months with RC Lens of France's Ligue 1, but returned to MLS in 2003 with the Colorado Rapids.

Cannon was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year again in 2004 after registering 10 shutouts and a 1.07 goals against average. He posted eight more shutouts in 27 games in 2005.

Cannon was a finalist for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year again in 2006 when he helped lead Colorado to the Western Conference final.

Cannon has appeared in two games for the U.S. Men's national team and is yet to concede a goal in two halves of play. He made his national team debut in 2003 in a 2-1 win against New Zealand.
