United denies rumors about surgery for RonaldoManchester, England (Sports Network) - Manchester United has denied reports suggesting that Cristiano Ronaldo will undergo surgery on his injured right ankle in the next few days. The 23-year-old Portugal ace suffered problems with his ankle during Euro 2008 and admitted after his country's exit from the tournament that he had been struggling with the injury for some time.
An initial statement from United read: "Manchester United's medical staff met
with the medical team from the Portuguese FA and Cristiano Ronaldo in Lisbon
regarding the ongoing treatment of his injured right ankle. "As a result, further specialist advice is being sought and an announcement will be made on any action in due course." Subsequent rumors had suggested that the decision had been reached to give surgery the go-ahead, but United insist that is not the case just yet. A spokesman later added: "Procedures are in place to seek specialist advice, in order to finalize the treatment plan as soon as possible." Ronaldo has been the subject of frenzied speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid this summer, while potential surgery is not expected to keep him out past the start of the new season.
