Villarreal signs Pires to extension

Villarreal, Spain (Sports Network) - Veteran French midfielder Robert Pires has signed a one-year extension with in-form Villarreal that will keep him at the club until the end of next season.

The 34-year-old's contract had been set to expire at the end of June, but Yellow Submarine coach Manuel Pellegrini has opted to extend the former Arsenal star's stay.

Pires joined Villarreal almost two years ago but his first season in Spain was decimated by a knee injury.

However, he has been a regular in Pellegrini's first-team plans this season and has helped the club move up to third in the La Liga table.
