Chakvetadze, Safina land in Ordina quarters

's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands (Sports Network) - Second-seeded and defending champion Anna Chakvetadze and surging Russian Dinara Safina were a pair of second-round winners Tuesday at the Ordina Open, a final tune-up for Wimbledon.

Chakvetadze, who enjoyed an opening-round bye this week, snuck past German qualifier Angelique Kerber 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1) on the grass courts at Autotron Rosmalen. The Russian Chakvetadze upset Serbian Jelena Jankovic in last year's finale here.

Meanwhile, the third-seeded Safina won her 14th match in 15 tries with a 6-1, 6-4 handling of France's Camille Pin. Safina was this month's French Open runner-up to Serbia's Ana Ivanovic and titled in Berlin last month.

One other second-round result saw eighth-seeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko overcome qualifier Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Bondarenko is rewarded with a quarterfinal bout against Chakvetadze.

An upset came in the first round when Romanian wild card Sorana Cirstea toppled last week's Barcelona champion Maria Kirilenko, this week's sixth seed, 7-5, 6-4.

In some other first-round play, lucky-loser Yung-Jan Chan of Taipei dismissed Swede Sofia Arvidsson 7-5, 7-5 and Thai qualifier Tamarine Tanasugarn tripped up last week's surprise Birmingham titlist Kateryna Bondarenko, of Ukraine, 6-3, 6-3.

On Wednesday, top-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva will open her stay here with a second-rounder against Italian Sara Errani.
