Chakvetadze, Wozniacki reach Pilot Pen final

New Haven, CT (Sports Network) - Top seed Anna Chakvetadze and unseeded Caroline Wozniacki were semifinal winners Friday at the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis event, a final U.S. Open tune-up.

Wozniacki scored an upset victory, upending seventh-seeded fellow 18-year-old Alize Cornet of France 7-5, 6-4 in 1 hour, 29 minutes on the hardcourts at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. The Dane piled up six service breaks en route to the mild upset.

The rising Wozniacki will meet Chakvetadze in Saturday's finale.

Chakvetadze had her hands full with two-time Grand Slam champion yet unseeded Amelie Mauresmo. After taking a relatively easy first set by a 6-3 count, the plucky Frenchwoman flipped the script in the second set by an identical score.

However, the number one Russian finally sent down the 2005 New Haven runner-up with a strong 6-1 decision in the final set.

Wozniacki will appear in her second career WTA Tour final, with the other resulting in a victory in Stockholm just three weeks ago. She's won 11 of her last 12 matches overall.

Chakvetadze is seeking her eighth overall singles title and second this year. The 21-year-old reached the semis here last year before falling to Lindsay Davenport.

This week's winner will collect $95,500, while the runner-up will pocket $51,000.
