Chakvetadze charges into Pilot Pen semisNew Haven, CT (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Anna Chakvetadze of Russia was an easy quarterfinal winner Thursday at the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis event, a final hardcourt U.S. Open tune-up. Chakvetadze charged past Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-3 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.
Day-5 upsets came when seventh-seeded Alize Cornet of France took out
struggling second-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and
Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki waltzed past third-seeded Frenchwoman Marion
Bartoli 6-4, 6-0. Hantuchova is a dismal 4-8 in her last 12 matches. Bartoli
was last year's Wimbledon runner-up. Cornet and Wozniacki will square off in Friday's semis. This week's winner will collect $95,500.
