Davenport withdraws from Amelia Island semisAmelia Island, FL (Sports Network) - Lindsay Davenport withdrew from her Saturday semifinal match with Maria Sharapova at the $600,000 Bausch & Lomb Championships due to illness. Tournament director John Arrix said that the 16th-seeded American had a fever Friday night, and felt even worse Saturday morning, preventing her from battling top-seeded Sharapova for a spot in Sunday's final.
The former world No. 1 Sharapova moves on to the final, where she will face
the winner of Saturday's other semifinal between France's Alize Cornet and
Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova. The former world No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion Davenport captured this event in 1997, 2004 and 2005. She has just one win lifetime against Sharapova, though, and earlier this year dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to the Russian star in the second round of the Australian Open. The 2008 Bausch & Lomb champion will pocket $95,500.
