Davydenko, Robredo reach second round in WarsawWarsaw, Poland (Sports Network) - Top-seeded and former champion Nikolay Davydenko and second-seeded and reigning titlist Tommy Robredo highlighted Tuesday's first-round victors at the $670,000 Warsaw Open. The 2006 champion Davydenko drubbed Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-2, while Robredo won his sixth straight match at this event by dousing Polish wild card Michal Przysiezny 7-5, 6-2. This clay-court event was previously held in Sopot.
Robredo beat 2002 winner Jose Acasuso of Argentina in last year's finale in
Sopot and also captured this tournament back in 2001. Third-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco took care of Polish wild card Jerzy Janowicz 6-4, 6-3, while Belgian qualifier Christophe Rochus toppled fourth- seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. In other action involving seeds, No. 5 Argentine Guillermo Canas held off Peru's Luis Horna 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, No. 7 Spaniard Marcel Granollers grounded Slovakian qualifier Michal Mertinak 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 and No. 8 Spaniard Albert Montanes dismissed Czech qualifier David Skoch 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Additional opening-round wins came for Italian Fabio Fognini, Spaniards Santiago Ventura and Oscar Hernandez, and American Wayne Odesnik, who should have his hands full with Robredo in the round of 16. On Wednesday, Davydenko will take on Czech Jiri Vanek, while Monaco will battle France's Florent Serra in some second-round play.
