Djokovic wins Pac Life openerIndian Wells, CA (Sports Network) - Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic was a straight-set second-round winner Saturday at the $3.589 million Pacific Life Open, the first ATP Masters Series event of 2008. The third-seeded Djokovic got past Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) on the hardcourts at the sprawling Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Djokovic was last year's Indian Wells runner-up to Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic is now 12-3 in 2008. Fourteenth-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu bested Italian lucky-loser Fabio Fognini 6-1, 7-6 (9-7), while 21st-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco mauled Dutch qualifier Robin Haase 6-2, 6-4 on Day 3 here. On Sunday, second-round matches will come for world No. 1 Roger Federer, former top-ranked star Andy Roddick and another former No. 1. Lleyton Hewitt. The three-time Indian Wells titlist Federer will take on Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, while the sixth-seeded Roddick will face German Tommy Haas and a 24th-seeded Hewitt will battle hot American Sam Querrey, who captured his first-ever ATP title last week in Las Vegas. The surging Roddick has won two of his last three events, including one in Dubai last week. Hewitt is a two- time Indian Wells champ. Indian Wells, nicknamed the "Grand Slam of the West," features a 96-player main draw and is staged over 11 days in the California desert. Thirty-two seeds received opening-round byes.
