Fognini, Volandri among Day-1 winners in UmagUmag, Croatia (Sports Network) - Seventh-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini and unseeded Italian Filippo Volandri were among Monday's first-round winners at the clay-court Croatia Open Umag. Fognini blitzed Lithuanian wild card Ricardas Berankis 6-3, 6-2, while the two-time Umag finalist Volandri vaulted past fellow Italian Flavio Cipolla 6-1, 6-4 at ITC Stella Maris. Fognini and Volandri will square off here in the round of 16.
Volandri reached back-to-back finals here in 2003 and 2004. In other Day-1 action, Serbian Boris Pashanski snuck past Italian qualifier Gianluca Naso 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (11-9); Croat Roko Karanusic clipped Italian qualifier Francesco Piccari 6-2, 6-2; and French qualifier Mathieu Montcourt mauled Croatian wild card Antonio Veic 6-4, 6-2. Montcourt is rewarded with a second-round match against top-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco. This week's top seeds are Verdasco, Croatian favorite Ivo Karlovic and five- time Umag titlist Carlos Moya. The Spanish Moya beat Romanian Andrei Pavel in last year's finale and also titled here in 1996 and from 2001-03. The 2008 Umag champion will collect $86,000.
