Gasquet, Robredo advance early in Toronto


Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Richard Gasquet and Tommy Robredo cruised into the second round on Monday at the $2,615,000 Rogers Masters in Toronto.

The Frenchman and 10-seed Gasquet faced a bit of a challenge from countryman Michael Llodra, but prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Despite a tough opening set, Robredo, the 12th-seed from Spain, dispatched Frederic Niemeyer of Canada, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 to gain the second round. The Canadian did manage to out-ace the victor by a 10-3 margin.

Nine-seed Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka bested Simone Bolelli in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) duel; 14th-ranked Chilean Fernando Gonzalez breezed by Julien Benneteau of France, 6-2, 6-1 and Russian 15-seed Mikhail Youzhny won in straight sets over Andreas Seppi from Italy 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.

One upset from Monday's action came in the late match, as Spaniard Feliciano Lopez upended 11th-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In other action on the hardcourt, American Robby Ginepri sank Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-3, 4-6, 6-4; Argentine Jose Acasuso recorded a comeback 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 7-5 decision over Latvian Ernests Gulbis; Nicolas Mahut outlasted Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2; Germany's Nicolas Kiefer sent down American Mardy Fish 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), and Canadian wild card Frank Dancevic easily topped Croat Mario Ancic 6-3, 6-4.
