Kirilenko rolls in Seoul opener


Seoul, Korea (Sports Network) - Top-seeded and 2007 runner-up Maria Kirilenko was among Tuesday's first-round winners at the $145,000 hardcourt Korea Open.

Kirilenko leveled helpless Slovakian Lenka Wienerova 6-2, 6-0 on Day 2 at the Olympic Tennis Courts. Kirilenko was last year's runner-up here to American superstar Venus Williams, who is not defending her title this week.

Up next for Kirilenko will be Czech Lucie Safarova.

Kirilenko was joined in the second round by fellow seeds Kaia Kanepi and Yung- Jan Chan, as a third-seeded Kanepi, of Estonia, held off Japanese qualifier Rika Fujiwara 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0 and an eighth-seeded Chan, of Taipei, overcame Italian Mara Santangelo 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Upsets occurred when Czech Klara Zakopalova took out fourth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 and Aussie Samantha Stosur stifled seventh-seeded Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 6-2, 6-0.

American Jill Craybas crushed Chinese lucky-loser Meng Yuan 6-0, 6-0, while Russian Ekaterina Makarova mauled Austrian Tamira Paszek 6-1, 6-2.

Additional opening-round wins came for Japanese qualifier Ayumi Morita, Russian qualifier Anastasia Pivovarova, the aforementioned Safarova and Canadian qualifier Stephanie Dubois.

On Wednesday, second-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer will meet Morita in a second- round affair.

The 2008 Seoul champion will claim $22,900.
