Kuznetsova, Mauresmo bow out in EastbourneEastbourne, England (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova and former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo were among Wednesday's second-round losers at the $600,000 International Women's Open, a final Wimbledon tuneup. Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki waltzed past the U.S. Open runner-up Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-2, while Mauresmo was leading Aussie Samantha Stosur 2-1 in the first set when the former Wimbledon champion retired due to a left thigh injury at Devonshire Park International Tennis Centre. The French Mauresmo was last year's runner-up here to recently-retired Belgian star Justine Henin.
Wozniacki and Stosur will meet in the quarterfinals here on Thursday. Meanwhile, second-seeded Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli, of France, leveled Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-3, 6-0 and qualifier Ekaterina Makarova took out third-seeded fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3 on Day 3. Bartoli halted a personal four-match losing streak. Fourth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska was tied with France's Virginie Razzano 3-6, 6-3 when play was suspended for the day due to darkness. Two other second-rounders saw Argentine Gisela Dulko outlast Belarusian Olga Govortsova 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 and Russian qualifier Alisa Kleybanova sneak past Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. The other quarters will pit Bartoli against Kleybanova, eighth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova versus her countrywoman Makarova and Dulko against the Radwanska-Razzano winner.
