Vassallo Arguello wins Dutch opener


Amersfoort, The Netherlands (Sports Network) - Seventh-seeded Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello highlighted Monday's first-round winners at the clay-court Dutch Open.

Vassallo Arguello handled Italian qualifier Alberto Brizzi 6-4, 6-3 at Sportlokaal de Bokkeduinen.

In other Day-1 action, Spaniard Alberto Martin topped Kazakhstan's Yuri Schukin 7-6 (8-6), 6-4; Belgian Christophe Rochus handled Spanish qualifier David Marrero 7-5, 6-2; Dutch wild card Thiemo De Bakker defeated Romanian Adrian Cruciat 7-5, 6-4; and Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili grounded Frenchman Thierry Ascione 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).

This year's top seeds are Frenchman Marc Gicquel, Argentine Jose Acasuso and defending champion Steve Darcis. The Belgian Darcis beat Austrian Werner Eschauer in last year's finale.

The 2008 Dutch Open winner will take home $86,000.
