Wawrinka reaches semis; Youzhny exits GstaadGstaad, Switzerland (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Swiss crowd favorite Stanislas Wawrinka secured a spot in the semifinals, while third-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny came up a quarterfinal loser Friday at the clay-court Swiss Open. The world No. 10 Wawrinka came from behind to beat eighth-seeded Argentine Guillermo Canas 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) at Roy Emerson Arena. Wawrinka was a finalist here three years ago.
Wawrinka's semifinal opponent on Saturday will be Romanian Victor Hanescu, who
bested French qualifier Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) on Day 5 here. Meanwhile, Youzhny gave way to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, as Garcia-Lopez is rewarded with a semifinal bout against seventh-seeded Russian Igor Andreev, a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victor over Croat Marin Cilic. The 2008 Gstaad titlist will collect $102,000.
