Youzhny rolls; Karlovic loses in GstaadGstaad, Switzerland (Sports Network) - Third-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny was an easy second-round winner, while 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic went by way of the upset Thursday at the clay-court Swiss Open. Youzhny leveled Italian Flavio Cipolla 6-3, 6-2, while the fourth-seeded Karlovic was upended by Romanian Victor Hanescu in a marathon bout, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (13-11), at Roy Emerson Arena. Hanescu saved three match points en route to the surprising 2-hour, 31-minute victory. Hanescu survived a 28-ace onslaught from "Dr. Ivo."
French qualifier Jeremy Chardy booked a spot in Friday's quarterfinals by
barely besting German qualifier Dominik Meffert 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-5), 7-6
(7-4), while Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez advanced via walkover when his
scheduled opponent, sixth-seeded German Nicolas Kiefer, withdrew from the
event with a toe injury. Chardy fired 19 aces in his grueling 2-hour, 45-
minute decision. The quarters will pit top-seeded Swiss favorite Stanislas Wawrinka against eighth-seeded Argentine Guillermo Canas, Youzhny versus Garcia-Lopez, seventh- seeded Russian Igor Andreev against Croat Marin Cilic and Hanescu versus Chardy. The 2008 Gstaad titlist will collect $102,000.
